Deanery Synod met in May and again in September, the two meetings dealing with very different issues.

In May the focus of the meeting was on environmental issues, particularly the establishment of the South Downs as a National Park. Synod heard from a member of the Souths Downs Campaign about the benefits of the area now being under a single authority, aiding the management of the land in terms of matters such as building, wind farms, road expansion and recreation. The benefits of being eligible for government funding and of achieving international recognition were also discussed. A member of the Sussex Downs Ouse Conservation Society also addressed Synod on the development of the waterway over the years and the aims of the Society to protect the environment of the river.

Synod was challenged to look at where God was in all our thinking about the environment, and to consider the stewardship of the world God had given into people’s care. A motion was then passed, asking the Diocese to encourage PCCs “to engage in confronting environmental issues.”

Further discussion ensued over issues such as the importing of stone for churchyard memorials, and the impact of the Newhaven incinerator and the Falmer stadium on the environment.

The Synod also heard of the deaths of Rev John Lyoyd-James and Bishop Ian Cundy.

In September, the beginning of a new synod, the main subject of the evening was the role of Deanery Synod members, in terms of contributing to debate, understanding current issues within the church, and fostering a sense of community in the Deanery.

Business of synod included the announcement of Diocesan Synod representatives, including Christine Doherty from our parish. Hugh Atherstone chairs the Diocesan Synod.
